Full Time Night Shift 11:00pm-7:30am $15k sign-on bonus

General Summary Statement

Assist in the oversight of the daily operations of the section. Assist in scheduling and staffing. Act as a point person for trouble shooting and problem solving. Handle phone inquires from physicians and other staff members. Performs a variety of routine and complex tests in all laboratory sections. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of laboratory operations, testing procedures, department policies. Authorized by the laboratory director to perform testing (and result reporting*) in the clinical laboratory for which they have been proved competent. Works under minimal supervision for specimen processing, test performance, and result reporting. Note: *Supervisory or director review is not required to report clinical laboratory results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Introduces self when interacting with patients, families, visitors or other employees. Must work in a close professional relationship with the supervisor, Laboratory Administration, Laboratory Medical Leadership, and other laboratory employees. Must work cooperatively with healthcare providers and nursing staff. Must exercise discretion, patience, tact, and respect when working with coworkers, patients, and providers.
2. Act as a supervisor designate – assume supervisory duties and performs “in charge” duties as needed. Evaluates and solves problems whenever possible in the absence of the supervisor. Communicates problems with the Laboratory Supervisor, or Director as appropriate.
3. Assists supervisor in the observation and documentation of laboratory staff competency. Completes all assigned duties within the required time frame.
4. Performs all duties of a Medical Technologist – ensures that instrument maintenance and/or function checks are performed and documented accurately, according to procedure. Troubleshoots instrument malfunctions and informs the Laboratory Supervisor. Reviews QC logs and documents any errors, omissions or discrepancies, and notifies supervisor. Assist supervisor with compiling QA data and prepares reports as directed by Supervisor. Monitors proficiency testing activity and assists supervisor with evaluation of results and documentation of responses to deficiencies.
5. Serve as a role model – maintain confidentiality regarding patient, hospital and laboratory business. Interacts professionally with other departments. Adheres to abnormal or critical results reporting policy and turn-around-time policy. Participates and monitors quality assurance indicators. Adheres to personal appearance standards and displays hospital ID badge. Adheres to all safety policies as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual.
6. Demonstrates awareness of appropriate inventory levels in relevant section of the laboratory. Takes action to prevent supply shortages or overages. Performs purchasing of supplies in the absence of the supervisor.
7. Training, Development, and Education – new procedures are mastered within established time frames. Demonstrates awareness of changes in procedures and protocols. Performs training assignments in an organized, thorough manner. Serves as a resource to other employees by sharing knowledge of procedures or testing outcomes when consulted. Develops, performs and/or evaluates special projects. Performs test evaluations and validation of new procedures and/or reagent systems. Creates or revises procedures according to CLSI guidelines.

Education Training and Experience
BS degree with MT preferred. Certifications, education, and/or experience must meet CLIA requirements for moderate and complex testing. Instrumentation experience preferred.
Must have 3 – 5 years’ laboratory section experience and strong leadership skills.

Licensure/Certification Preferred
MT (ASCP), MLT (ASCP), HEW or eligible.

Work Environment and Hazards
Laboratory environment; may be exposed to potentially hazardous substances, contaminated specimens, or unpleasant odors.
