The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is looking for a Manager Technical II to join the Surgical Pathology Lab team. The selected candidate will have the following responsibilities. 

• Manages the daily technical operations of 3 gross laboratories and autopsy services in compliance with all regulatory requirements of College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), and Pennsylvania Department of Health. 

• Ensures gross laboratory staff checks the proper submission of pathology specimen. Maintains accession records necessary to confirm specimen identity and ensures correct fixation of the specimen received. 

• Collaborates with specimen submitting departments to ensure proper submission of specimens and documentation. 

• Trains residents, fellows, gross technician and PA I’s in frozen section preparation. 

• Ensures gross staff performs gross dissection and accurately dictates the gross description of the specimen received. 

• Evaluates gross staff’s dissection, dictation and provides mediation to those that do not meet the division standards. 

• Develops processes to improve patient safety within the gross room. 

• Ensures gross rooms are stocked and physically maintained in accordance with the established guidelines of the department and the needs of the residency program. 

• Ensures work allocation among gross staff is fair while maintaining an acceptable level of efficiency. 

• Ensures accurate, safe and timely processing of tissue from accessioning through submission to process lab to maintain patient safety and division’s expected TAT. 

• Works with Managers and other division supervisors to develop processes that improve patient safety, department efficiency and overall department TAT. 

• Develops a plan to cross train pathologists’ assistants in surgical pathology gross laboratories and Medical Pathology Autopsy in accordance with the requirements of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and in accordance with pathology and safety department policies. 

• Ensures maintenance of skills learned in cross training by managing a work rotation schedule for pathologist’s assistants to ensure all gross dissection laboratories are adequately covered in times of emergency, high volume and staff turnover. 

• Works with Operations and Quality Managers to develop and maintain QA measures that ensure patient safety and laboratory efficiency. 

• Performs the assigned tasks and other duties. Functions in the capacity of a professional pathologist assistant in a busy academic medical center.

    Education or Equivalent Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree and Possess the ability to perform tasks that require accurate and specific color distinction.
    • 2+ years of experience managing high volume clinical labs while meeting superior customer satisfaction expectations and knowledge of and ability to manage, the general hazards encountered when working with potentially infectious materials, hazardous chemicals, radioisotopes and laboratory equipment.
    • PA (ASCP)CM Or other equivalent certification (ASCP) CM
    • Master’s Degree preferred and Possess the ability to perform tasks that require accurate and specific color distinction (Preferred)
    • Additional education and or training in Management or Lab Management
