Financial Counselor, Self Pay
Summary of Accountabilities:
The Self Pay Financial Counselor is responsible for assessing the financial status of all direct, emergency, urgent and elective uninsured patients who are admitted to the hospital (Inpatient) or who have had an Outpatient Surgical Procedure. This assessment is directly tied to securing the services rendered to a direct source of reimbursement. Sources include but not limited to State Funded Medical Assistance and Governmental Insurance Programs. A Self Pay Financial Counselor is assigned a weekly average of 23 new cases representing $1.3 million gross dollars. In addition, the Self Pay Financial Counselor is responsible to actively work their open assigned cases until the case is financially secured; these cases represent a weekly average of 100 cases @ $9.7 million gross dollars.
Personal Computer, EPIC, SMS, Navinet, Promise, telephone system, fax machine, copier, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
Requires consistent use of PC, keyboard, and telephone. Frequent standing, sitting and walking.
Bachelor’s Degree in Health Related field or equivalent Financial Counseling experience (10-15 years). Previous Financial Counseling experience highly preferred. Previous experience within a Hospital Revenue Cycle Department required. Strong Knowledge of the Tri-State Area’s State Medical Assistance Application process and eligibility requirements. Knowledge of State and Federal Financial Assistance Programs, experience discussing and resolving financial situations with patient and/or patient guarantor, strong confidence discussing and collections of patient payments.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, must demonstrate a mature approach to problem solving for all types of issues. Must demonstrate the ability to handle a high volume of case referrals and to plan, organize and work independently. Have a strong knowledge of medical terminology, HIPAA regulations, and insurance/payer regulations.We believe that the best care for our patients starts with the best care for our employees.
