Summary:

  • Ability to deliver safe and effective care to patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse and/or physician throughout the peri-operative experience. Demonstrated knowledge of surgical instrumentation and ability to handle instrumentation properly. Demonstrated knowledge of sterile technique and ability to create and maintain a sterile set-up. Demonstrates professional responsibility and accountability for actions.  Independently works in 3 services or subservices and rotates to them.

Responsibilities:

  • Supports patient rights and upholds the ethics of the organization.
  • Participates in the assessment of patient care by recognizing and reporting signs of intra-operative complications and emergencies to surgical team.
  • Maintains an overall performance level equal to or above 2.8 as reflected on the annual performance evaluation.
  • Maintains employment record that is free of discipline under the Performance Improvement and Progressive Steps policy during current performance review cycle.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver safe and accurate care to patients throughout the peri-operative experience under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or physician.
  • Document expert in 1 surgical service and is independent in four, rotates regularly.
  • Attends Operating Room Preceptor course annually
  • Attends two conferences or courses related to patient care in the operating room every year (or completes 12 CEUs).
  • Facilitates the continuum of care by collaborating to provide patient care that is appropriate for the age and developmental level of the patient.
  • Participates in improving organizational performance by completing a major department project within the department every year.
  • Maintains two areas of responsibility in the department.
  • Participates in managing environment of care and gives an annual department in-service on patient care.
  • Manages information appropriately
  • Participates in surveillance, prevention, and control of infection.
  • Receives positive evaluations from precepted students.
  • Completes departmental and hospital annual mandatory education prior to the end of the current performance review cycle.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • Surgical Technologist Certification by entity holding a Nationally recognized Institutional or program accreditation or successfully completed training program in US ARMY, Navy or Air Force. An individual may be hired and work as a Surgical Technologist without certification for a period of six months. The individual must provide documentation of successful completion of an approved surgical technology program.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • 2+ years Continuous and recent Surgical Technician experience. 
  • 0-1 years Central Processing Department experience preferred.
