Finance Consultant - Research

Summary:

The position supports both the CPUP ACFO and CPUP Director of Finance-Research. Position will manage the following Research service functions including: monthly financial information, reporting and variance analysis; financial planning and analytics, and post award grant accounting/reporting. Consolidated reporting scope includes all CPUP Department PSOM fund groups. Responsible for monthly reporting and administration of CPUP/PSOM Available Cash totaling ~ $304.5m (CPUP Unrestricted, Endowments, Gifts and PSOM unrestricted). Manages the PSOM component of the Multi-Year projection process and consolidation. Provides consulting, advisory, and training services to the CPUP department grant personnel as needed. Also, responsible for maintaining efficient, customer-focused financial processes and systems, to ensure alignment with the present and future needs for the Clinical Departments.

    Responsibilities:

    Develop and manage monthly PSOM standardized Financial Reporting component for CPUP Departments including sponsored projects, gifts, endowments and unrestricted funds.

    Serve an advisor to Departmental CPUP and PSOM DOF’s for financial strategy related to both the current year and multi-year planning.

    Assist with the management of both Analytics and Annual Budget/Multiyear Financial Planning.

    Assist, along with CPUP, PSOM and University leadership, with the development and implementation of a cash reinvestment strategy related to restricted, unrestricted, endowments, and gifts funds.

    Assist with the management and reconciliation of transfers from CPUP to PSOM. Report on sources and uses to senior leadership.

    Collaborate with Department leadership in implementing Research financial performance reporting systems. Ensure timely, accurate reporting of monthly financial statements including drafting monthly entity management report. Partner with CPUP and PSOM Administrations in developing and communicating system wide performance results.

    Support the Directors of PSOM/Research Operations in research financial operations, clinical research and post award grant accounting. Advise, consult and train grant personnel.

    Compliance and Management Control – Ensure that operations fully utilize appropriate financial controls and are in compliance with Federal, State, Professional and Local financial requirements.

    Maintain strong working knowledge and current skills using Essbase, Smart view, Hyperion Reports and Planning, Business Objects, BEN, Excel, attend education sessions and seek coaching from CPUP Finance in becoming proficient with applications.

    Assist DOF-Research with RTR Inventory database, monthly reporting, and communication to both UPHS paying entities and CPUP Departments.

    Responsible and accountable for having financial statements and statistical results accurately and consistently reported and prepared on an accrual basis in conformity with general accounting principles and in accordance with Penn Medicines’ policies and procedures. Maintain working knowledge of University/SOM/Hospital/VA side of financial operations.

    Education or Equivalent Experience:

    Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required.

    5 years of experience in a financial setting. Thorough knowledge of academic medicine accounting required.

    Master's Degree in MBA or MS in Accounting/Finance preferred.

    Skills & Abilities:

    Strong service orientation and extremely strong communicator with ability to translate financial data into business intelligence to be utilized effectively by key stakeholders.

    Demonstrated record of collaborative working relationships with a variety of publics -- physicians, the School of Medicine and hospital finance, etc.

    Experience with a variety of hardware and software platforms.

    Excellent Communications skills.

    Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to handle multiple priorities a matrixed reporting.

    Must be able to effectively and appropriately manage confidential information and to work responsibly in a team environment as well as independently.

    Strong program budgeting skills, particularly as they relate to building new programs and generating revenue, are highly valuable.

    Accustomed to working in a team-based/interdependent environment.

    Ability to comprehend the financial drivers of all aspects of the organization (clinical, research and education) and reconcile to the best overall interest of the organization.
