The Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP)is looking for a Cytogenetic Technologist to join the team. The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities.

Primary Responsibility

· Performs processing and analysis of blood malignancy, bone marrow and surgical biopsy specimens using conventional cytogenetic and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques. Ensures College of American Pathologists (CAP) turnaround time for hematological malignancies is met.

Summary of Duties

· Applies knowledge and skills to perform a variety of routine cytogenetic tests using conventional cytogenetic analysis.

· Applies knowledge and skills to perform FISH analysis.

· Enters patient information and results into the Laboratory Information System and Patient Database. Forwards preliminary results to ordering providers.

· Exercises professional judgment in determining the acceptability of results prior to release to the patient records.

· Organizes and prioritizes workload to meet established turnaround time (TAT) goal for hematological malignancies. Acts to resolve potential barriers to TAT goal. Advises supervisor immediately of any unresolved issue that will adversely impact TAT.

    • Follows all established laboratory protocols and policies for performance of technical work.
    • Recognizes critical results and responds per established protocols.
    • Adheres to laboratory quality control policies and documentation requirements.
    • Performs only those assays for which trained and authorized to perform.
    • Adheres to Penn Medicine’s policies and procedures relevant to position and conforms to all safety practices.
    • Maintains the confidentiality of health information on all patients.
    • Communicates effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and other personnel.

    Machines/Tools & Equipment

    Automated Cytogenetics platform (CytoVision), fluorescence microscope, general laboratory equipment: refrigerators, freezers, personal computer, laboratory information system, and other office equipment.

    Physical/ Working Requirements

    Normal requirements consistent with clinical laboratory services.

    Minimum Degree Requirements and Experience Required

    · Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree in a chemical or biological science or medical technology with academic credits that meet CLIA requirements for high complexity testing.

    · For Bachelor’s degree, a minimum of 2 years of cytogenetic clinical lab experience is required. For Associate’s degree, a minimum of 15 years of cytogenetic clinical lab experience is required.

    · Years of experience will be considered in lieu of degree.

    · Knowledge of, and ability to manage, the general hazards encountered when working with potentially infectious materials, hazardous chemicals, and laboratory equipment.

    Preferred Skill Requirements

    · Broad knowledge of various laboratory methods and techniques in cytogenetics, quality assurance, in addition to PC and LIS knowledge.

    · Strong analytic and problem solving skills.

    · Ability to set priorities, make decisions, implement changes and meet deadlines while working effectively with diverse groups of people in a frequently changing environment.

      · Strong interpersonal skills and creative abilities
