General summary Statement: 

In collaboration with the supervising physician, the Vascular Surgical Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner will provide surgical and medical care to surgical patients. The Physician Assistant will provide direct health care management to patients. The APP will use critical thinking skills and has a strong knowledge base in Vascular Surgery. Must be able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team, this includes but is not limited to: physicians, nurses, pharmacy and case management. 

The purpose of this job is to deliver high quality efficient care to our Vascular Surgery population, who have undergone invasive and surgical procedures to treat conditions affecting the blood vessels. This includes but is not limited to patients who have had peripheral angiography, EVAR, carotid stenting, CEA, DVT. Candidates must have an in-depth understanding of the vascular system, excellent diagnostic skills, highly analytical, detail-oriented and able to make important decisions under pressure.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluating patient histories, relevant tests and blood work in pre-admission testing. 
  • Assessing patients with emergency vascular conditions in the emergency room. 
  • Assessing, evaluating and treating patients with vascular conditions on hospital units. 
  • Discharging patients post procedures with appropriate orders, instructions and according to vascular core measures.
  • Postoperatively, removal of staples, sutures and drains when requested by attending surgeon. 
  • Communicating with other physicians as appropriate to perform relevant tests prior to vascular procedures.
  • Treating conditions relating to the veins, arteries and other blood vessels. 
  • Educating patients regarding the surgery and clearly outlining the risks, benefits and overall process with them.
  • Answers patient’s questions regarding pre-operative care, understanding of surgical procedures and regarding post-operative care. 
  • Knowledge of advancements in vascular surgery as well as the broader related medical and surgical field.
  • Knowledge of core measures in vascular surgery and appropriate documentation requirements.
  • Building relationships with patients, providers and the hospital team.
  • The ability to follow instructions, but also think independently. 

 

Education Training and Experience 

Minimum 3 years clinical nursing practice in Surgery, Cardiology and Critical Care. Minimum 2 years advanced practice. 

 

Licensure/Certification 

Licensure as a Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner in the state of PA 

Current basic life support (BLS) 

Current Advances Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
