Senior Design Strategist - Job Summary:

  • Design Thinking is the disciplined approach of defining and validating problems, the technical requirements of solutions, and the viability of those solutions to deliver and capture value. Design Strategists apply methods to gain new insight into the context behind problems, explore divergent solutions, rapidly validate assumptions through prototyping activities and ultimately define the business case to scale new products or services, which can often require the development of new business models.
  • At the Center for Health Care Innovation (CHCI), the design strategist team applies these methods to serve our mission to reimagine health care delivery at Penn Medicine, improving the value of care we deliver and how we capture that value. These designers work collaboratively with UPHS faculty and staff on projects that develop new services and technologies that both improve the experiences of patients and providers while improving health outcomes and reducing cost.
  • The Senior Design Strategist role helps to advise more junior design and non-design CHCI staff and project partners in their work to apply best practices of Design Thinking in the context of health care. This incumbent is leveraged across many projects and helps to operationalize and continuously improve CHCI programmatic initiatives, such as our "Innovation Accelerator Program" and Digital Platforms such as "Agent". In their role, the Sr. Design Strategist communicates and partners directly with UPHS executive leadership to help define innovative strategic priorities and source tactical projects to meet those strategic goals. The Senior Design Strategist consistently leads operations and project strategy for core initiatives. Guides staff and project partners to accelerate project progress and potential for impact. Delivers high quality project outcomes through measured results and scaled success. The Senior Design Strategist leads Center for Health Care Innovation (CHCI) staff and project partners to apply methods of design and innovation to understand a variety of complex problem spaces and define opportunities for improvement. Dedicates time and effort to improving work environments/culture for the entire team.
  • The Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation facilitates the rapid, disciplined development, testing and implementation of new strategies to reimagine health care delivery, improve patient outcomes, patient and clinician experience, and reduce the cost of care. We believe the best way to make big improvements to patient health and health care delivery is to experiment quickly at low cost, only scaling once we find high impact solutions. Responsibilities:

  • Develops stakeholder engagement strategy and supports staff in effectively communicating project goals and progress.
  • Supports others in organizing work and communication strategies to ensure project success and the experience of project partners.
  • Effectively negotiates with health system leadership to define project success and garner resources to support interventions at scale.
  • Develops and leads initiatives and platforms to improve the way we work and accelerate innovation across the health system.
  • Works with CHCI leadership and executive partners to source and define project opportunities that dramatically improve the way we deliver care at Penn Medicine.
  • Mentors and supports the professional development of other CHCI staff.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.

  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.


Design Strategist - Job Summary:

  • The Design Strategist manages CHCI (center for health care innovation) projects focused on reimagining the way we deliver care at Penn Medicine. The Design Strategist collaborates with other CHCI staff and project partners to apply methods of design and innovation to understand a variety of complex problem spaces and define opportunities for improvement. The Design Strategist leads project strategy and stakeholder relationships and engages with CHCI leadership to take new models of healthcare delivery from development to scaled impact.

  • Develops and executes design research strategies to gain new insight and define project objectives.
  • Leverages research insights to define measurable project goals
  • Develops actionable strategies to test key hypotheses on how to reach defined targets
  • Executes strategies to engage key project stakeholders in ensure project success and scale.
  • Manages center projects and demonstrates consistent success in driving new initiatives to scaled impact.
  • Works to secure productive and positive relationships with other staff and project stakeholders.
  • Helps to lead the continuous improvement of our innovation methods and how we work. Is seen as a unique contributor by center staff and project partners.

Associate Design Strategist - Job Summary:

  • The Associate Design Strategist collaborates with other CHCI (center for health care innovation) staff and project partners to work on projects focused on reimagining the way we deliver care at Penn Medicine. The Associate Design Strategist applies methods of design and innovation to understand a variety of complex problem spaces and define opportunities for improvement. He/She helps to define and execute strategies for testing new solutions that increase the value and decrease the cost of care for patients and care providers.
  • The Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation facilitates the rapid, disciplined development, testing and implementation of new strategies to reimagine health care delivery, improve patient outcomes, patient and clinician experience, and reduce the cost of care. We believe the best way to make big improvements to patient health and health care delivery is to experiment quickly at low cost, only scaling once we find high impact solutions. The Center provides an exciting and fast-paced opportunity for motivated, entrepreneurial individuals to effect systemic change at Penn Medicine and across the healthcare industry.

  • Collects and interprets data to inform project direction and evaluate outcomes.
  • Assists in developing design prototypes and experiments to test assumptions.
  • Translates research findings into thoughtful insights and artifacts that help to define project objectives and directions.
  • Develops communication materials that effectively convey project goals and findings.
  • Evaluates and communicates project progress and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Works with other CHCI staff and operational partners to take new interventions to scale.
  • Participates in initiatives with other CHCI staff to improve the way we work and enable a culture of innovation across the organization.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

    Education/Experience:

    Senior Design Strategist - Required Education/Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree required
    • Experience in human centered design research and information/graphic design required  
    • 5+ years of working experience in design or related fields required (health care experience preferred)

    Required Skills and Abilities:

    • Effective communication skills in various methods, verbal, written, and presentations
    • Rapid prototyping and experiment design
    • Demonstrated project management skills
    • Ability to execute structured, insightful, and data-driven analysis and to identify and communicate key takeaways

    Design Strategist - Required Education/Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree required, preferably in Design
    • 3+ years of working experience in design or related fields required

    Required Skills and Abilities:

    • Rapid prototyping and experiment design
    • Effective communication skills in various methods, verbal, written, and presentations
    • Demonstrated project management skills
