Job Summary:

  • The Communications Manager will devise, implement, and manage a communications strategy on behalf of the leaders in education, inclusion and diversity at the Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM). The individual in this position will be responsible for developing and overseeing internal communications, including those among staff, faculty, and operational units for key areas including Student Affairs, Office of Inclusion and Diversity, Undergraduate Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, Masters and Certificate Programs, Biomedical Graduate Studies, Biomedical Postdoctoral Programs. Deliverables will include time sensitive communications, scheduled reports, and regular newsletter content, among others. Additional responsibilities will include targeted external communications efforts designed to strengthen the image and awareness of all educational programs in PSOM, particularly amongst donors, parents, and partners.
  • The Communications Manager will also play a role in educational project grant writing on behalf of leadership, will contribute to institutional social media content, and oversee website strategy and maintenance. Reporting to the Associate Director for Strategic Communications, this individual will work synergistically with Penn Medicine's Communications Department and communications staff within other PSOM programs, and act as a consultant to students and student groups on messaging, newsletters.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, refine, implement, and manage communications strategies across named programs.
  • For education-related work, facilitate the sharing of information between leadership and students via email; develop innovative ways to enhance communication using physical and electronic collateral (email newsletters, banners, electronic signage, etc.) and social media, etc.
  • For diversity, equity, and inclusion-related work, develop and implement a communications strategy to drive awareness of and action to support institutional DEI agenda and initiatives, as well as reporting on key achievements and work in progress and providing support to committees supporting the Action for Cultural Transformation (ACT) initiative
  • Provide consistent, clear, and high-quality communications in accordance with branding strategy and develop and maintain communication material archives for areas of responsibility.
  • Gather information and participate in collaborative, strategic decision-making and liaising with PSOM departments to guide communications strategy about both routine and timely/high priority messages.
  • Devise, refine, and implement a website strategy; work with faculty and senior staff to create content for websites, keeping content dynamic, current and appealing, while consulting with the PSOM web team.
  • Work in partnership with the leaders of the main Penn Medicine social media channels to promote key education content in a fresh, engaging, and persuasive manner.
  • Promote and build audiences for education events. Oversee the creation of electronic promotional materials, including other marketing materials and, when needed, produce print materials such as program booklets and flyers.
  • Serve as a liaison to Penn Medicine counterparts including Communications, Development, Marketing, and Human Resources.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.  

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree (Required); preferably in Communications, Journalism, English or a related area of study 
  • Master's Degree (Preferred); preferably in Communications, Journalism, English or a related area of study
  • 8+ years of experience in non-profit, educational, or scientific or healthcare writing, strategic communications, and related work - (Minimum Requirement for Bachelor's Degree)
  • 5+ years of experience in non-profit, educational, or scientific or healthcare writing, strategic communications, and related work - (Minimum Requirement for Master's Degree)
  • Experience in Education, Science or Medical settings (Preferred)
  • Experience with or demonstrated interest in diversity and inclusion & related communications work (Preferred)
