Summary:

  • Primary duty is to transport patients throughout the medical complex in a safe, courteous, and timely manner. When appropriate and requested by Nursing personnel the telemetry transporter will monitor the patient's vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure (via Propaq or manually when necessary), respiratory rate, lung sounds, pulse oximetry, and ECG tracings via Propaq monitor. In addition, the telemetry transporter will continuously assess the patient's overall condition and immediately notify the patient's nurse if any adverse conditions are detected or observed. Responds to code calls and as part of the hospital emergency preparedness plan for internal and external emergency management. Assist with patient movement when transferring patients from bed to wheelchair or stretcher. Carry out minor patient care duties while patient is in transit. Transport of deceased patients to the hospital morgue. Update NaviCare tracking system through use of a cell phone to maintain accurate locations and times associated with patient transports.

Responsibilities:

  • Transport of monitored and unmonitored patients throughout the medical center. Responding to emergency situations and code calls in a safe and timely manner.
  • Transports patients throughout the hospital maintaining a constant focus on the safety and well being of the patient.
  • Provides superior customer service using proper techniques and equipment to facilitate the efficient and timely movement of patients.
  • Verifies patient identity using two approved identifiers.
  • Assures that the patient is properly covered assuring dignity and comfort.
  • Assists patients with transfer to wheelchairs, stretchers, beds, and procedure tables.
  • Secures patient and any appropriate equipment prior to transport. Assures adequate oxygen is available prior to start of transport and upon arrival at destination.
  • Responds appropriately to emergencies and code calls.
  • Reports any clinical events or unsafe conditions to the patient’s nurse as well as the shift coordinator or the dispatcher.
  • Presents information accurately, clearly, and concisely to ensure understanding. Assures that an adequate hand-off has occurred with every patient transport when applicable.
  • Participates in Departmental staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Clocks in and out on time, logs into NaviCare system, when necessary advises dispatcher of availability in a timely manner.
  • Connects patient to appropriate monitoring devices prior to and upon completion of every telemetry transport.
  • Receives and relays pertinent patient information to Nursing staff at the start and completion of every transport and at every appropriate hand-off point, completing all required documentation.
  • Initiates appropriate emergency responses (code call, rapid response) when patient’s condition warrants.
  • Applies monitoring equipment including cuffs, leads, probes, etc. after communicating actions to the patient.
  • When not assigned to an active transport utilizes downtime to check and properly store Department equipment.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • Must maintain all certifications and successfully complete annual competency reviews throughout employment as a telemetry transporter
  • Emergency Medical Technician (Required)
  • Must maintain all certifications and successfully complete annual competency reviews throughout employment as a telemetry transporter

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • 1+ years EMS or patient transport experience Successful completion of UPHS Telemetry Transporter Training Program
