Position Description:
Penn Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the Orthopaedic Surgery service as the overnight coverage provider at HUP/Pavilion. Responsibilities will include caring for postoperative patients with musculoskeletal oncologic conditions, assessing inpatient orthopaedic consultations, and treating or triaging acute orthopaedic injuries seen in the emergency department. This is a low volume inpatient service, typically with up to 5 primary inpatients, up to 5 ongoing consultations from other services, plus 0-5 new consultations from other services or the emergency department per night.
This position will require a high level of independence but is well-supported through collaborative interactions with orthopaedic faculty and senior level residents. There are additional surgical APPs managing similar services at night within HUP/Pavilion. Knowledge of basic musculoskeletal system physiology and pathology as well as injury models is essential, as a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions will be seen.
All Advanced Practice Providers will function under the guidelines as designed by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines and are credentialed through that body. The Advanced Practice Provider hired by the Department of Advanced Practice will be held accountable through a formal job description, through the delineation of privileges, and through their agreement with their collaborating/supervising physician who has initiated a Collaborative Practice Agreement. All clinical work hours and associated requirements will be defined and managed under the direction of the collaborating physician/division designee, and within the Human Resource guidelines.
Minimum Requirements:
Masters prepared as an acute care nurse practitioner or physician assistant
Pennsylvania licensure as an ACNP or PA-C
BLS and ACLS required
Experience in orthopaedic surgery preferred
Experience in working with multidisciplinary teams highly valued
Additional Information:
The position is 1.0 FTE equivalent to 80 hours / 2-week block.
10 hour shifts Monday through Thursday nights (7pm-5am)
