As a member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the primary purpose of this position is to function as a full-scope Midwife providing independent and/or collaborative management of care with the Ob/Gyn team in accordance with the Department’s mission. This care will extend to uncomplicated gynecological and obstetric patients in the outpatient setting as well as obstetrical patients and their newborns during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods in the hospital setting. The Midwife will also participate in teaching medical and midwifery students and junior residents the management of normal labor and delivery, and provide feedback regarding their performance. The candidate will project a positive image of UPHS through excellent communication, teamwork, teaching, and patient care skills, to support patients/families, facility personnel and UPHS processes to ensure coordinated, efficient, and safe/quality care while providing an excellent experience.

All midwives function under the guidelines as designed by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines and are credentialed through that body. The CNM hired by the Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania will be held accountable through a formal job description, through the delineation of privileges and through their agreement with their collaborating physicians who have initiated a Collaborative Practice Agreement. All clinical work hours and associated requirements will be defined and managed under the direction of the collaborating physician/division designee, and within the Human Resource guidelines.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

Currently licensed to practice professional registered nursing (RN) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and M.S.N. and licensed as a certified nurse midwife (CNM) in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Prior to employment, the CNM must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board and licensed by the Commonwealth of PA for prescriptive authority.

Must have current CPR and NRP certification.

At least three years obstetrical experience preferred

Additional Information:

Participation in up to (but no more than) 2 holiday calls per year and potential for some weekend Labor Floor and Perinatal Evaluation Center (PEC) coverage;

Cross coverage of vacations with other CNMs with appropriate adjustments to day coverage and sessions.

2 days /week of Labor Floor and PEC coverage.

4 sessions a week in the Penn Ob/Gyn Associates clinical practice (may include Gyn).

Position requires articulate, mature, self-directed highly motivated individual with a strong clinical background in Ob/Gyn.

Ability to work independently and also as part of a team; excellent judgment required. Ability to maintain professional attitude at all times, must adhere to departmental standards for professional office environment and maintain confidentiality.

Strong written, verbal communication and teaching skills required.

Must have ability to interact with the public and faculty in a sensitive and professional manner.

Must demonstrate competence in the assessment, treatment and care of the specific patients served. Minimum requirements for continuing education
as outlined by the Nurse Practice Act.
