Job Summary:

  • The Communications Manager will oversee the HUP Communications Department with responsibilities to devise, implement and manage an effective communications strategy on behalf of the HUP Executive Team. The individual in this position will be responsible for the development and oversight of internal HUP communication distribution among staff, faculty and HUP stakeholders. Deliverables will include time sensitive communications, institutional priorities, goals and values, calls to action and change initiatives. Mechanisms range from scheduled routine distribution methods to multidimensional messaging platform initiatives and special purpose communications. 
  • Additional responsibilities will include contributing to external communication efforts designed to strengthen awareness of HUP initiatives, promoted through Penn Medicine social media, news and website content. The Communications Manager will also play a role in evaluating and amplifying current communication channels to ensure that internal communications are accessible in order to reach all HUP stakeholders and that messages are effective, timely, accurate and well-organized. Reporting to the Director for Operations Integration, this individual will work synergistically with the HUP HET, Penn Medicine's Communications Department and communications staff within other HUP departments, and act as a consultant to staff and managers on messaging strategy and tactics.  


    • Develop and implement overarching strategy for comprehensive internal communication activities and services – from written pieces to live events to multimedia experiences across HUP, including incorporation of new communications and messaging platforms.
    • Gather information and participate in collaborative, strategic decision-making and liaising with HUP Executive Leadership Team and department leaders to guide communications strategy about both routine and timely/high priority messages.
    • Manage electronic communications, including distribution of daily, weekly and monthly notices and special-purpose electronic communications.
    • Write, edit and review content for internal communications activities and campaigns.
    • Create and maintain email distribution lists, strategies and schedules, including dynamic targeting for entity-wide and local/department/group-specific communications.
    • Develop metrics and analytics for defining and evaluating success of new internal communications initiatives and campaigns and methods of sustaining and building on gains.
    • Serve as entity liaison to Penn Medicine Communications team for development and management of data, templates and process for electronic communications.
    • Provide creative consultation and strategic oversight for communications campaigns and strategies that will increase value, engagement and continuity of operations both across HUP and within segmented internal audiences.
    • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
    • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

      Education or Equivalent Experience:

      • Bachelor's degree; preferably in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or a similar field and at least 7 years of experience in an internal or communications role in a corporate setting or consulting firm demonstrating the ability to complete complex and thoughtful work.
      • Healthcare experience preferred
      • Master's degree and at least 5 years of experience in an internal or communications role in a corporate setting or consulting firm demonstrating the ability to complete complex and thoughtful work.
      • Healthcare experience preferred

      Skills & Abilities:

      • Outstanding written and verbal communications and presentation skills as demonstrated by writing samples (portfolio required).
      • Demonstrated knowledge and application of organizational and self-managerial skills.
      • Excellent judgment in determining the appropriateness and content of messages.
      • Working knowledge of intranet platforms and social media as communications vehicles, content management tools and communication best practices.
      • Proven ability to apply a creative approach to produce clear, compelling, motivating communications that achieve desired outcomes.
      • Must have ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to handle multiple priorities, and to work under strict deadlines.
      • Proven effectiveness as a strategic consultant and relationship builder, including managing stakeholders and collaborating with all levels of the organization, up to and including the executive level.
      • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare operations and systems - Preferred
      • Ability to work successfully in a matrix managed environment - Preferred
      • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite for graphic design, video production and editing, digital photography, HTML, social media, Email marketing systems - Preferred
      • Communications management software – Preferred
