Digital Access Manager

  • The Digital Access Manager is responsible to oversee the development and deployment of technology based resources to improve patient access, enhance communication with our referring providers and hospital partners, and guide the strategic direction for the patient portal across the Penn Medicine enterprise. This will include managing multiple complex projects, which significantly impact business outcomes, and requires a large degree of cross-functional participation and coordination. This role requires strategic thinking, and the ability to influence and collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders, including Penn Medicine providers, clinicians, PennChart end users, IS, Marketing, Revenue Cycle, and Health System Leadership to achieve program goals, and ensure alignment with health system strategy.
  • This role is responsible for the direct management, and coordination of the Digital Access Business Process Integration Consultants and their activities, including design, development and execution of projects that support current clinical and operational goals. The role assumes responsibility for oversight of local and enterprise-wide governance, provides guidance and direction on access and communication strategy, ensures implementation of standard processes to reduce variability and risk, and leverages analytics to measure success.


  • Strategically evaluate and recommend access communication strategies to health system leadership for both PennChart and non-PennChart technologies.
  • Direct and manage the activities of the Digital Access Business Process Consultants working on enterprise wide programs.
  • Align and maximize Penn Medicine existing access and communication programs to support new hospital partnerships and onboarding new practices into Penn Medicine.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams to facilitate effective local/enterprise governance and prioritization.
  • Provide oversight for enterprise and local-level strategic optimization projects.
  • Develop and apply project management methodologies and governance models to ensure successful project and program delivery and consistency with organizational objectives.
  • Partner with clinical and operational stakeholders to support enterprise initiatives across Outpatient, Hospital and Ancillary departments.
  • Promote implementation of best practices/standards across the enterprise with focus on technology and improvements to clinical/business processes.
  • Provide continuous performance based feedback to all team members to ensure that employees understand expectations and requirements.
  • Keep up to date on new access technologies and industry trends.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 5+ years electronic patient scheduling, EMR, and practice operations in a healthcare environment required.
  • 2+ years demonstrated management experience preferred.
  • 3+ years in a healthcare environment or related experience required.
  • Master of Arts or Science preferred.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of electronic medical records functionality.
  • Understanding of health care operations.
  • Experience with Project Management tools and methods.
  • Excellent consultative, relationship management and facilitation skills.
  • Strong communication skills with all levels of staff and personnel.
  • Ability to analyze, diagnose, suggest and implement process change.
  • Work independently and as a team player.
  • Computer software skills and knowledge.
  • Ability to translate organizational and operational issues into understandable and meaningful solutions.
  • Strong analytic and problem solving skills, including an understanding of business accounting, operations, business development and systems thinking.
  • Understanding of patient billing.
