The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is seeking a Pathology Assistant II !

Position Description:
Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Performing all tasks associated with gross technician and PAI
Checking the proper submission of pathology specimens
Maintaining accession records necessary to confirm specimen identity while ensuring correct fixation of the specimen received
Assisting pathologists with frozen sections
Performing gross dissection and accurately dictating the gross description of the specimen received
Providing gross dissection education, assistance and oversight to gross room technician, PA I in the gross room
Ordering supplies, restocking and maintaining the gross lab in accordance with the established guidelines of the department
Maintaining records of equipment, frozen staining quality and temperature logs in accordance with the requirements of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission for the Accreditation of the Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)
Managing gross specimen archive and proper disposal of specimens in accordance with pathology and safety department policies
Ensuring grossed samples are submitted for processing promptly and maintaining audit-able records of the submissions to the histology lab
Functioning in the capacity of a professional pathologist assistant in an academic medical center
Pathologist Assistant is required to observe bio-hazard waste handling, chemical hygiene, and fire and emergency procedures. Pathologist assistant performs routine and highly specialized procedures that requires a very high level of technical skill and use of independent judgment. As a member of a team consisting of accession clerks, other pathologist assistants, residents, fellows, pathologists and other clinicians the PA is expected to maintain an open line of communications with other members of the team and the histology lab.

Minimum Requirements:
Please apply if you possess these qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in biological science required
2+ years of on the job training supervised by a certified pathologist assistant or pathologist in specific area of surgical pathology, gross room and/or medical pathology autopsy required
Extensive knowledge of gross and surgical anatomy, dissection technique, autopsy, histologic processing methods and pathology nomenclature preferred
5 + years experience as a Pathologist Assistant in an appropriate setting is preferred
Certification as Pathologist Assistant by the board of registry of the American Society for the Clinical Pathologists is preferred
Must be self motivated and exercise independent judgment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required
