The Neuro Intensive Care is a 22-bed unit focusing primarily on the care of neurosurgical and neurology patients. Our nurses are at the bedside caring for patients with subarachnoid hemorrhages, arterial venous malformations, epidural hematomas, subdural hematomas, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, brain tumors, myasthenia crisis, stroke, seizure, and intracranial bleeds. The Neuro Intensive Care Unit nurses are actively involved in bedside translational nursing research. Several of our staff members hold positions as translational nursing research fellows. They are involved in the process of writing grants and submitting research proposals for our bedside projects. The bedside nurse is an integral part in research. The Neuro Intensive Care Unit team is comprised of critical care nurses who have been recognized by the American Association of Critical-care nurses (AACN) for exhibiting high quality standards, excellence in the intensive care setting, and for excellence in collaborating care of patients and their families within a healthy work environment. This Neuro ICU has been recognized as exhibiting “excellence in critical care” by meeting and exceeding the strict criteria set forth by the AACN. The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Neuro ICU team has earned the esteemed Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence, given by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
