Summary: Performs routine pulmonary and exercise diagnostic procedures and assists the physician with special studies requiring a high degree of technical sophistication. 2. Ensures that all procedures are performed safely, consistently and accurately in accordance with laboratory policy. 3. Maintains the functional accuracy of and performs routine maintenance and quality control procedures on the laboratory instrumentation. 4. Responsible for setting up and performing all of the procedures which are the scope of practice of the pulmonary lab. 5. Performs data collection, analysis, computation and report generation for all tests performed. 6. Acts as a technical resource and support person for the Pulmonary physicians and ordering physicians. 7. Participates in the training of students 8. Maintains supply inventory, performs billing ,MIS functions and necessary clerical duties which assure the complete testing process. 9. Participates in patient/ family education 10. May be called upon to perform the duties of a Respiratory Therapist if appropriate. 11. Demonstrates an understanding of appropriate safety and infection control techniques. Non-essential Accountabilities 1. Participates in departmental and organizational Performance Improvement activities. 2. Attends 85% of staff meetings and or documents 100% review of minutes. 3. Maintain all life safety competencies (CPR certification, fire/safety, infection control, MSDS, body mechanics, radiation safety and electrical safety.) Successful completion of departmental orientation and yearly technical/ clinical updates. 4. Participates in clinical education of students and staff members.
Responsibilities: Identify the competencies required for each patient population that the employee works with (neonate, child, adolescent, young adult, middle adult and older adult) Must be familiar with the current departmental diagnostic equipment such as spirometers, body plethysmograph, gas analyzers, oximeters, cardiac monitors, pneumotachographs, metabolic cart, bronchoscopy equipment, exercise equipment.
Credentials:
Education or Equivalent Experience: Theoretical knowledge of pulmonary function testing and exercise studies as would be typically acquired through any of the following: Associate or Bachelor Degree in Respiratory Care or Bachelor or Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology required. Associate Degree in applied sciences or equivalent training with at least four years experience in a pulmonary function or exercise lab. Completion of a formal training program in Respiratory Care. Completion of a formal training program in Cardiopulmonary Technology, Exercise Physiology, Pulmonary or Cardiac Rehabilitation.
