Summary:

  • Serves as Nursing Professional Development Generalist who supports the planning, coordination, implementation, evaluation, and revision of the orientation programs for the Department of Nursing for nurses and ancillary staff, other educational programs (i.e. AHA courses, EMR training, Preceptor Workshop) and competency assessments. Provides education contact hours for appropriate programs. Assists with organizational educational initiatives as needed. Must be flexible to work all shifts as needed.


Responsibilities:

  • Plans, coordinates, implements, evaluates, and updates the orientation programs for the Department of Nursing for nurses and ancillary staff, including all supporting other onboarding activities as needed.

    Provides EMR training as an EPIC credentialed educator to nursing department staff.

    Participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of competency assessments for the department of nursing.

    Prioritizes and organizes work effectively, meets deadlines, is thorough in project completion. Demonstrates flexibility, resilience, and a professional collaborative demeanor. Demonstrates initiative for problem solving independently, but reaches out for assistance appropriately.

    Plans, coordinates, implements, evaluates, and updates continuing education programs.

    Selects appropriate speakers (e.g. physicians, vendor, other professional) for programs and provides program coordination and speaker support.

    Provides education in a variety of formats based on the topic presented and the needs of learners, nursing units, and the organization.

    Serves as a backup instructor for American Heart Association courses (BLS, PALS, ACLS) as needed. Maintains instructor certification for AHA programs.

    Teaches classes as the sole Educator, as well as teaches as a member of a team for group projects.

    Demonstrates the ability to effectively teach and communicate to personnel at all education and skill levels.

    Provides programs with NPD Continuing Education Hours.

    Develops teaching materials that are of professional quality.

    Plans programs that align with organizational goals.

    Develops materials that are original and do not violate copyright and are cost appropriate for the program. Demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality when using case studies, and in the preparation of all education materials.

    Demonstrates creative thinking and problem solving and knows when to seek appropriate consultation.

    Develops new programs/courses as needed and updates courses as needed.

    Communicates support of organizational values and strategies.

    Delegates to, and collaborates appropriately with NPD administrative support team, educator colleagues, and other stakeholders.

    Attends assigned committee meetings and contributes to the committees. Serves as Chairperson when appropriate.

    Provides assistance to peers, participates in training new Nursing Professional Development Department employees.

    Promotes staff growth by consulting on clinical, education and professional issues.

    Assesses educational needs of employees in assigned areas on an ongoing basis via observation, written feedback and communication with Nurse Managers, Directors, staff and hospital personnel.

    Provides appropriate intervention for orientee performance problems.

    Communicates on an ongoing basis during the orientation period with the orientee, preceptor(s), Nurse Manager, & Director to evaluate progress and learning needs of the new employee (if applicable).

    Promotes innovation and creativity in the practice environment. Facilitates an environment that supports evidence based practice.

    Promotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care and the profession of nursing.

    Supports the following organizational programs: Magnet® , Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, Nursing Councils.

    Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Nursing (Required)
  • Nursing or Healthcare Field 2+ years Clinical experience in specific area assigned is required. Experience in Nursing Professional Development is desired, but not required. Nursing Professional Development Specialist in the Generalist role: at least 2 years of hospital based experience in Med Surg or Telemetry. Experience in Nursing Professional Development is desired, but not required.
  • Master of Arts or Science
  • Nursing or Healthcare Field
