Summary:

  • The Director of Nursing Clinical Systems will provide leadership in the implementation, integration and on-going evolution of clinical information systems. Participates in the ongoing development of automated processes and tools related to quality, safety, and regulatory requirements. Acts as a translator, working closely with information systems to ensure that clinical user requirements are documented, tested and implemented according to specification. Participates in end-user training, supports system upgrades and evaluates post-go live functionality and usage.

  • Communicates the mission, vision and goals of PPMC in all interactions.
  • Fosters collegial professional relationships within nursing service, across hospital departments and UPHS.
  • Partners with leaders in other patient care disciplines to promote quality patient care via the integration of clinical information systems
  • Uses interpersonal skills to affect learning and practice changes.
  • Facilitates the professional developments of others through internal consultation and role-modeling.
  • Crafts clear, concise communications.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and organization information.
  • Advocates for patient’s needs and rights pertaining to clinical information systems, including issues of confidentiality.
  • Integrates the UPHS blueprint for quality in clinical system design.
  • Effectively collaborates with interdisciplinary team members through participation in committees /work teams/task forces
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills in relating to staff, patients, families, visitors and other health care professionals
  • Patient/Employee Safety Accountabilities:
  • Integrates evidence-based patient safety principles in all clinical practice initiatives and clinical system design.
  • Fosters a culture of safety. Encourages reporting of occurrences and near misses related to clinical information systems function.
  • Participates in follow-up/resolution of RCA action items related to information systems.
  • Participates in Entity and Department wide initiatives for Patient /Employee safety.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of patient /employee safety when carrying out daily responsibilities of their position.
  • Operations Accountabilities:
  • Provides leadership to achieve desired outcomes for and leadership of clinical information systems.
  • Provides clinical expertise in translating Penn Medicine Blueprint for Quality and Patient Safety into clinical system functionality.
  • Evaluates current nursing practice and patient care delivery and leverages technology to improve the quality and efficiency of care.
  • Establishes and leads initiatives to support the development and maintenance of a work environment related to clinical information system and electronic documentation.
  • Promotes effective and efficient interdisciplinary meetings and committees.
  • Functions as a liaison between clinical staff and information system staff to translate needs.
  • Identifies gaps in clinical process design and escalates issues for decision making.
  • Effectively interacts with all members of the health care team to determine needs and interpret system capabilities.
  • Provides leadership for nursing involvement in interdisciplinary quality improvement initiatives related to clinical information systems.
  • Oversees the development, documentation, and communication of policies and procedures as they relate to clinical workflow and documentation.
  • Oversees the development of downtime procedures, policies and paper documentation tools.
  • Ensures nursing policies and procedures related to clinical systems are consistent with design process and identifies new policies when necessary.
  • Supports new system implementation projects including planning meetings, go-live support, post go-live issue resolution and lessons learned.
  • Participates in EMR planning meetings at entity and system level.
  • Works with IS to develop, test and implement system enhancements.
  • Understands the impact of decisions and actions on the budget and schedules resources and time to minimize costs.
  • Leverages technology/innovations to support efficient/cost effective care and delivery.
  • Identifies educational needs of the clinical system super user and end user and creates plan that addresses those needs.
  • Collaborates with nursing and IS leaders to develop a nursing workforce that can practice effectively in a technology rich environment.
  • Works collaboratively with IS education to develop training tools to assist with clinical system implementation.
  • Assists with the development of evaluation instruments and conducts evaluations.
  • Works with the nursing professional development specialist to develop a competency based orientation for clinical information systems and keeps this current.
  • Evaluates educational programming to support informatics, safety and practice initiatives.
  • Provides support in promoting clinical system delivery methods including system demos, educational forums and one to one coaching.

Credentials:

  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)
  • Registered Nurse Licensed in Pennsylvania required.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
  • Nursing Informatics
  • Master of Arts or Science (Required)
  • Nursing Informatics Or Master's in Related Field
