Job Summary:

  • Working under moderate supervision, the Simulation Operations Specialist will work with simulation team members, instructors and faculty to provide technical expertise and human physiological responses in order to support simulation activities for education, assessment, research and process improvement purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Support simulation activities by anticipating, preparing and providing the appropriate simulator, medical supplies and disposables required based upon provided scenario parameters.

  • Provide technical support during simulated scenarios including operation of digital cameras, video cameras, audio/video mixer, digital/analog converter, web-based session recording software, monitors, LCD projectors as well as other necessary medical equipment.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot and repair computerized manikins (software and hardware), task trainers, virtual reality trainers and related multimedia peripherals.
  • Serve as an operations specialist for simulation-based exercises by programming patient manikin software to model human physiological responses with variable oversight and serve as the “patient” voice.
  • Manage assets and stock items utilizing online inventory management system, advising administrator on equipment/disposables purchases needed to maintain appropriate inventory
  • Review scheduled events to ensure that each has appropriately assigned space, simulation technician and other resources as needed.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Credentials:

  • EMT-B/EMT-P, LPN, Medical Technologist license, and/or Computer IT Certification (Required)

Education/Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/IT (Preferred)
  • 4+ years of experience basic medical knowledge and experience working with medical equipment (Required)
  • Experience as an EMT-B/EMT-P, Medical Technologist and/or Computer IT Technician (Required)
  • Experience using medical simulators such as those manufactured by Laerdal (Preferred)

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend assignments
  • Experience with audio/visual equipment and software for recording, duplication, mixing, and editing
  • Knowledge of computer programs, hardware equipment, and software applications
  • Good communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of organizational personnel, staff/faculty and students
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities in a timely, meticulous, and professional manner, demonstrating initiative and creativity
  • Ability to work well under pressure, set priorities and make critical decisions
  • Technologically agile, ability to learn new software and hardware quickly and independently
  • Self-motivated and requires minimal supervision with the ability to work as a team member
  • Ability to assess, troubleshoot and fix equipment failures in a timely fashion
  • Mastery of basic medical knowledge in order to accurately recreate common clinical scenarios
  • Familiarity with simulation services, technologies and applications
  • Ability to express technical information clearly and simply to non-technical persons
