The Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgery Service at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania has an exciting opportunity for an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Physician Assistant (PA-C) to join their team of board certified general surgeons and Advanced Practice Providers. The GI Surgery team at HUP is part of the Department of Surgery and provides care to patients undergoing pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery for both benign and malignant conditions. It also helps to care for patients undergoing elective bariatric and general surgery procedures. The bariatric surgery portion of the service includes, but is not limited to, management of patients before and after Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass and Adjustable Laparoscopic Gastric Band. Additional management of patients includes those undergoing hernia repair, bowel resection, colectomy and cholecystectomy. As an NP/PA on this service you will be part of a high functioning inter-professional team who is responsible for the management of complex and critically ill GI surgery patients. Responsibilities for the NP/PA who joins our team will include inpatient management, clinical decision making, procedures according to credentialing, complex discharge planning and transitions in care, care coordination, team collaboration, and education of patients, family and staff. In addition, the provider will participate in research as applicable, ensure regulatory compliance, document care according to standards, and prescribe in accordance with their collaborative agreement and State regulations.

The NP/PA, will provide quality care across the continuum in collaboration with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, nursing staff, and other members of the care team, and be expected to manage patient care autonomously within the scope of their professional practice. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the role also involves participation in the Department’s Quality Improvement initiatives and Unit-Based Clinical Leadership (UBCL). Opportunities for professional growth and development are available through research, lecturing, publications, and involvement with departmental and hospital projects and committees.

All ACNPs and PA-C’s function under the guidelines designed by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines and are credentialed through that body. The CRNP or PA hired will be held accountable through a formal job description, the delineation of privileges, and their agreement with their collaborating/supervising physician who has initiated a Collaborative Practice Agreement.
