Penn Medicine is seeking a full-time, day shift, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Medication Use Policy at the University of Pennsylvania (HUP).


The pharmacy specialist is a member of the Center for Medication Use Policy in the Department of Pharmacy. The pharmacist should be an effective communicator and be able to integrate themselves within the health team and current structure of the Pharmacy Department. The specialist is the Secretary of the HUP Medication Safety Committee, leads process improvement projects aimed at increasing safety, coordinates the development of safety guidelines, maintains the drug libraries on all smart infusion pumps for the Health System and monitor medical and nursing compliance. The qualified individual will ensure the department’s medication use policies and procedures related to medication safety are in compliance with medical literature and best practices. Finally, the candidate should fulfill requirements associated with hospital and department policies and procedures, JCAHO and other regulatory agencies.

Summary:

Coordinate the HUP Medication Safety Committee Meeting

Manage Pharmacy related Medication event reports, trend error event data to report to the Medication Safety Committee and other committees as needed, and lead initiatives aimed at decreasing unsafe medication use at HUP

Recommend modifications to the EMR to ensure safety based on best practices, review of medical literature, and recent medication related safety events.

Prepare and distribute communication to the Department, Nursing, and Providers as necessary about important medication safety updates/issues/ alerts

Maintain the Drug Libraries for Smart Infusion Pumps for the Health System

Collaborate with Nursing and other providers to ensure safe medication use.

Precept Pharmacy Students and Residents


Credentials:

  • Pharmacist (Required)
  • Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Certification in area of specialty practice (or Pharmacotherapy if no specialty certification available) Must be obtained within 1 year of hire

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science
  • Pharmacy- Bachelor of Science Degree or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy Personal commitment to advancing the profession. Demonstration of contributions to pharmacy practice and leadership skills
  • Successful completion of a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency OR As a licensed pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy with >/=50% of time in area of specialty Successful completion of a PGY2 Specialty Residency preferred. Preferably in area of specialty practice they are applying for OR As a licensed pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy with >/= 50% of time spent in area of specialty
