Summary:

  • Provides continuing education for the Department of Nursing. Provides education in a variety of formats based on the topic presented and the needs of learners, nursing units, and the organization. Provides programs with PA Nurses Contact Hours. Conducts annual competency assessment sessions for the Department of Nursing. Coordinates the orientation program for the Department of Nursing. Mentors Department of Nursing employees. Participates in hospital and nursing projects and serves on committees. Teaches American Heart Association (AHA) courses. Must be flexible to work all shifts as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Assesses educational needs of employees in assigned areas on an ongoing basis via observation, written feedback and communication with Nurse Managers, Directors, staff and hospital personnel.
  • Develops new programs/courses as needed and updates courses as needed.
  • Plans programs that align with organizational goals.
  • Develops materials that are original and do not violate copyright and are cost appropriate for the program. Demonstrates respect for patient confidentiality when using case studies, and in the preparation of all education materials.
  • Provides continuing education, required in-services and competency assessments for the Department of Nursing, and non-nursing departments, as needed.
  • Provides education as needed in a timely manner for classroom or the clinical area, based on unit needs for the patient or staff learning needs.
  • Selects appropriate speakers (e.g. physicians, vendor, other professional) for programs and provides program coordination and speaker support.
  • Adheres to Nursing Professional Development Department, PSNA, and AHA policies for program management.
  • Attains PSNA contact hours or equivalent certification for RN programs as appropriate for topic and length of program.
  • Maintains instructor certification for AHA programs.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively teach and communicate to personnel at all education and skill levels.
  • Teaches classes as the sole Educator, as well as teaches as a member of a team for group projects.
  • Demonstrates the ability to use a variety of teaching methods both in the classroom and clinical environments.
  • Applies adult learning principles.
  • Teaches current standards of Nursing Practice and integrates current CCH Policies and Procedures into curriculum; integrates current Joint Commission and other regulating agencies’ standards into curriculum.
  • Distributes course evaluations for participants to rate teaching effectiveness, learners’ outcomes as well as Educator’s teaching effectiveness. Uses feedback from these evaluations in future courses.
  • Provides “real time” unit based education for clinical needs. For example, bedside instruction for nurses using new equipment or doing a procedure for the first time.
  • Facilitates an environment that supports evidence based practice.
  • Teaches CPR initial and retraining courses. Performs Lead Instructor role for these courses. Teaches CPR station at PALS and ACLS as needed.
  • Teaches ACLS, PALS, NRP, STABLE courses, based on units served. Performs Lead Instructor role for these courses.
  • Participates in Dept. of Nursing and Organizational wide education programs as needed. Provides curriculum development and teaches these programs. For example, the electronic medical record or other computer based projects, Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification education, organization wide policy and procedure implementations.
  • Plans orientation program (classroom and clinical) appropriate for all job descriptions within assigned areas.
  • Instructs classroom orientation (general and unit specific) for job descriptions within assigned areas, for Patient Care Assistants, Nursing Transporters, Nursing Assistants, Techs, Monitor Techs, and as needed, for Unit Coordinators.
  • Ensures all orientation documentation is completed and turned in to Human Resources, and Nursing Professional Development by the end of orientation. This includes but is not limited to the Initial Competency Assessment and tests or competency assessments completed by the employee during orientation.
  • Communicates on an ongoing basis during the orientation period with the orientee, preceptor(s), Nurse Manager, & Director to evaluate progress and learning needs of the new employee.
  • Provides appropriate intervention for orientee performance problems.
  • Provides support to preceptors via Preceptor Workshops, and unit based consultations.
  • Supports newly licensed RNs in the Penn Medicine Nurse Residency Program. Performs responsibilities in the Nurse Residency Program as assigned.
  • Promotes best practice by demonstrating a commitment to quality patient care and the profession of nursing.
  • Promotes innovation and creativity in the practice environment.
  • Promotes staff growth by consulting on clinical, education and professional issues.
  • Prioritizes and organizes work effectively, meets deadlines, is thorough in project completion.
  • Accepts constructive feedback about performance or behaviors and shows evidence of change.
  • Develops teaching materials that are of professional quality.
  • Attends assigned committee meetings and contributes to the committees. Serves as Chairperson when appropriate.
  • Communicates support of organizational values and strategies.
  • Supports the following organizational programs: Magnet® , Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification, Nursing Councils.
  • Facilitates group processes, e.g. committees. Manages resources throughout program programs or projects.
  • Maintains equipment in working order. Uses equipment appropriately, follows Department policies for equipment and supply use and maintenance.
  • Inspects classroom or area used for program after use to ensure the area is clean and ready for the next user. Restocks handouts and supplies as needed.
  • Provides assistance to peers, participates in training new Nursing Professional Development Department employees.
  • Demonstrates creative thinking and problem solving and knows when to seek appropriate consultation.

Credentials:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (Required)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (Required)
  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Nursing (Required)
  • Nursing or Healthcare Field 2+ years Clinical experience in specific area assigned is required. Experience in Nursing Professional Development is desired, but not required. Nursing Professional Development Specialist in the Generalist role: at least 2 years of hospital based experience in Med Surg or Telemetry. Experience in Nursing Professional Development is desired, but not required.
  • Master of Arts or Science
