- The Medical Assistant's (MA) primary responsibility is to assist in the delivery of health care management for the health care agency through maintaining a patient/customer focus, supporting the delivery of high quality care, sharing a passion for patient and customer centered care, and assisting in meeting or exceeding patient satisfaction and financial/operational targets. The MA provides indirect patient care through performance of patient interviewing, technical tasks, and patient/family communication under the direct supervision of a clinical manager.
Patient Care Accountabilities:
- Provides customer service to inbound callers by identifying and assessing callers' needs quickly and accurately and coordinating services and resolving/directing caller concerns to the right individual or department for resolution. Displays characteristics of inquiry, empathy, courtesy and respect during communication with customers.
- Assists Call Center Nurses in the collection of patient data including review of past medical, vital signs, chief complaint, symptoms, concerns, current medications for assessment by licensed staff.
- Documents patient information in the medical record to include update vital signs, medications, test results, and patient concerns, etc.
- Maintains clinical and administrative knowledge base and designated skill set in order to meet established goals for daily call metrics, and defined individual/team goals.
- Understands insurance restrictions for durable medical equipment (DME) and supply ordering, lab work, referral needs, etc.
- Assists in the ordering or processing of DME and supplies and coordinates the scheduling of services (e.g. mobile phlebotomy) or referral needs on behalf of the clinical care team.
- Ensures care coordination and complete communication (closes the loop and follow up) between internal and external individuals, in an appropriate and timely way.
Employee Health Accountabilities:
- Administers vaccines; reads PPD results, under the direction of licensed staff.
- Specimen management: obtain specimens for testing if applicable (including performing phlebotomy and anterior nares nasal swab collections), performs laboratory and screening tests, records results in EMR and reconciles with logs where appropriate, documents and reports findings to providers, performs all quality controls as per Point of Care Testing guidelines, prepares specimens for transport as necessary.
- Maintains work area, treatment area, and testing areas in a clean, safe manner; restocks with supplies and equipment as needed.
- Manages office telephone systems, including answering calls and returning messages.
- Participates in responsive and proactive telephonic patient care, including care coordination with specialists, ancillary services, hospitals, labs, other home care agencies, and all other involved health services.
- Obtains and scans documents as appropriate and required for delivery of care: test results, faxes, reports, notes, referrals, etc.
- Completes medical forms and other clinical requests for information as appropriate and required.
- Prepares and sends patient correspondence as required.
- Assists clinical staff staff with the maintenance of patient education materials, supplies as needed.
- Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
- Schedules patient appointments and maintaining communication to confirm future appointments.
- Documents patients' medical information, including medical history and health insurance information.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulatory standards (ex TJC, DOH, FDA, HIPAA, HCFA, DPW, LCGME, SCGME, etc)
- Flexible and readily adopts new processes and engages in practice operation changes.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
- MA Certification (Preferred)
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program OR 7+ years of experience working as an MA may be considered in lieu of MA program completion. (Required)
