Summary:
The Patient Financial Advocate serves to assist all patients of the Cancer Center and ultimately resolve their financial situations, prior to receiving treatment, especially those who are uninsured, underinsured and have low incomes. This includes establishing payment plans and other financial arrangements, determining patient’s eligibility for Medical Assistance and Hospital Sponsored Financial Assistance and qualification of grants.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with patients and staff to assess the patient’s cost of treatment and identify means of payment for care.
- Coordinates financial assessment for new patients and established patients with changes in insurance coverage. Performs financial counseling process on all patients prior to treatment, which includes patient financial obligations, billing practices and establishing payment arrangements.
- Re-verifies benefits to ensure all insurance, demographic, and eligibility information is obtained and entered into PennChart in an accurate manner.
- Assist patients in completing all applications required to receive external eligibility and internal financial assistance prior to service. Follows up with potential sources of aid until determination of approval or a denial is received. Applications include but not limited to Federal Funded Applications, State Medicaid Applications, Financial Assistance applications, Co-Pay Assistance Program applications, and other outside assistance (i.e. transportation or other community services).
- Documents financial counseling process in PennChart.
- Keeps patients and the referral source (Social Work, Navigator, etc.) up to date on efforts to obtain COBRA, Charity Care, and Medical Assistance.
- Demonstrates an understanding of patient confidentiality. Adheres to HIPAA privacy and confidentiality guidelines and regulations as well as all UPHS policies and procedures.
- Attends staff meetings and continuing education as directed by management.
- Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
- Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
Education or Equivalent Experience:
Associate's Degree (Preferred)
Associates Degree in healthcare related field or minimum of two years' college preferred. AND 2+ years Experience in a healthcare environment with medical business office experience. Must have knowledge of insurance billing requirements and patient billing processes along with an understanding of government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid.
