Hyperbaric Medicine

Participate as a Hyperbaric Technician and Chamber Operator on an as needed basis.

• Care for and tend to multiple patients inside the hyperbaric chamber during hyperbaric therapy sessions. Required to monitor patients' vital signs and conditions and document accordingly, observe patients for signs of oxygen toxicity and communicate to physician, maintain patient comfort and privacy. Maintain inside chamber readiness. Adhere to Hyperbaric fire and safety regulations. • Promote infection control: Wash hands before and after patient contact. Follow isolation procedures. Report needle stick injuries to RN or Occupational Health. • Chamber maintenance: Performs daily maintenance accordance of established safety HBO procedures. Participates in periodic cleaning of chamber interior. Reports defective equipment or anomalies of the dive profile to Safety Director or Chief of Clinical Services. • Maintain safe environment and protect patients from injury: Utilize safety devices including bedrails and wheel locks on beds, locs on wheelchairs, and rails and straps on stretchers. Reports defective equipment to clinical engineering and Clinical Manager. Demonstrate aswareness of Hyperbaric Safety Procedures. • Patient Privacy and Emotional Security: Orient newly admitted patient(s) to physical environment. Protect privacy of patient whenever care is being administered and observe confidentiality policy. Provide comfort measures for patient such as positioning, nourishment as appropriate, and verbal reassurance. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of t patient served. • Documentation and Communications Record patient care activities on appropriate forms in a timely fashion. Complete entry with date, time and signature as per policy. Communicate findings and/or changes in patient condition to the RN or physician in charge in a timely fashion. • Daily chamber operations: Chamber set-up/shut down: Turn on compressor and line up system for therapy exposure, run specified pressure profile according to set tables. Assist in assuring transport of patients to and from hyperbaric treatments. Compression: Compress chamber and occupants to exposure depth following a comfortable profile time for all patients. Monitor chamber pressure, chamber environment and life support systems and correct for any variations. Observe all inside personnel for signs of pressure related problems. Record exposure in operations log. Maintain constant vigilance of the system and occupants throughout the treatment exposure. Decompress chamber at a safe, predetermined rate, turn off compressors and return system to baseline configuration. Set up chamber for next day or emergency exposure. Assist with loading and unloading of patients. • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, polices, and procedures • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

H.S. Diploma/GED required AND must be able to equalize ear and sinus pressure with no surgery to either. No history of spontaneous pneumothorax, asthma, or air trapping disease, required. Responsible and dedicated individual able to work unusual hours, required.  3+ years' Experience as a certified EMT in the state of PA, required. Experience in a multiplace hyperbaric chamber X And Basic knowledge of hyperbaric chamber operations standards, NFPA, mechanical aptitude, knowledge of compressors, pneumatic valves, piping systems, controls systems and filtration packages, preferred. Current BCLS certification, required.  ACLS/PALS , preferred.  Certification as CHT (Certified Hyperbaric Technologist) or DMT (Dive Medical Training) or must obtain either certification within two years of hire, preferred.
