The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) Monitoring Tech will provide real time observation over several patients at a time via video monitoring. The goal of observation is to quickly identify and note ictal (seizure) events and alert appropriate personnel to the occurrence of each seizure. The EMU Monitoring Tech is also responsible for adjusting video cameras in order to keep patient in view and in focus, oversee the adequate function of EEG recording equipment, administer or monitor continuous performance tasks, and otherwise maintain the integrity of the monitoring procedure, calling appropriate personnel to assist when problems occur. Assess and respond to integrity of digital recording equipment including the integrity of electrodes with indirect technical supervision of a Neurodiagnostic EEG technologist following introductory period.
Completes training with resultant expertise in recognition of clinical ictal behavior and interaction with patients during seizures to elucidate specific ictal symptoms. • Completes special training and resultant expertise in aspects of use of monitoring equipment related to video and EEG monitoring. • Provides vigilant continuous observation of patients undergoing Video EEG monitoring. • Communicates with clinicians including technologists, nurses and physicians as it relates to patient continuous video EEG and patient safety concerns. • Direct patient communication and contact necessary to trouble shoot equipment in the patient’s room. • Documents in the patient’s electronic medical record and EEG monitoring equipment. • Recognizes and eliminates physiological artifacts and electrical interference that may obscure the EEG recording. Notifies appropriate staff members for assistance when needed. • Participates in continuing education sessions and quality assurance related to video EEG monitoring and Epilepsy. • Ensures individual preparedness related to regulatory and accreditation standards for the EMU department including staff training, annual mandatory education and HIPPA compliance. • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.
H.S. Diploma/GED, required. And 6+ months working in a patient care environment, required. Successful completion of ASET LTM 100 Course: “Introduction to Long Term Monitoring for EMU Personnel” within 60 days of hire, required. BLS Certification, preferred.
