The Student Geriatric Associate is a specialized role for nursing students currently enrolled in a BSN program. Student Geriatric Associates (SGAs) work closely with Geriatric Nurse Consultants to provide targeted interventions that address a broad scope of geriatric issues known to contribute to cognitive and functional decline during hospitalization. SGAs can assist with ambulation and range of motion exercises, aid in bathing and care of intact skin, assist with toileting and continence care, provide feeding support and tray setup, and provide cognitive stimulation through recreational activities.
-SGAs at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania are found in 4 areas – Neurology, Cardiac Intermediate Care, Medical Oncology and the Advanced Medicine Units.
- Students must be able to attend all orientation sessions provided during offer process.
-This is a year-round program for matriculated students. It is not a summer externship. All Student Geriatric Associates are expected to commit to at least 6 months in the program.
Responsibilities:
•Bed making, moving, lifting, turning patients, feeding patients.
•Ability to effectively and safely utilize all equipment.
•Excellent communication skills.
Education or Equivalent Experience:
-Students must be matriculated in an accredited BSN nursing program having minimally completed the nursing foundations/fundamentals clinical course with a 3.0 GPA overall and in the nursing major.
-Must be CPR certified though the American Heart Association.
