Tumor Registrar

Job Summary:

  • The Tumor Registrar is responsible for performing Case-finding, Abstraction, Tracking of Diagnostic and Treatment information and Follow-Up (of Analytic cancer cases for the patient's lifetime) in accordance with requirements of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC), as well as the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR). The Tumor Registrar is responsible for maintaining patient confidentiality and security of patient data at all times. This position works as part of the Cancer Registry team alongside fellow Tumor Registrars and Lead Tumor Registrars and follows direction from Lead Tumor Registrars, as needed, and reports directly to the Assistant Director of the Cancer Registry Department. The Tumor Registrar is responsible for completing annual education requirements outlined by the National Association of Cancer Registrars (NCRA) to ensure the maintenance of their active and good standing Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential. The Tumor Registrar will be a remote employee for the majority of the time, but may be requested to travel onsite for trainings, meetings and/or events. The Tumor Registrar is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure and ergonomically correct working environment at their remote location.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs Case-finding of Cancer Cases according to the requirements of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) and/or the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) – while meeting and maintaining current Productivity Quota and Accuracy requirements per Departmental standards.
  • Performs Abstraction of Cancer Cases according to the requirements of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) and/or the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) – while meeting and maintaining current Productivity Quota and Accuracy requirements per Departmental standards.
  • Responsible for tracking of diagnostic and treatment information of Cancer Cases according to the requirements of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) and/or the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) to ensure a complete and accurate Abstract – while meeting and maintaining current Productivity Quota and Accuracy requirements per Departmental standards.
  • Performs follow-up of Analytical Cancer Cases according to the requirements of the American College of Surgeons (ACo) Commission on Cancer (CoC) and/or the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR) for the lifetime of the Patient – while meeting and maintaining current Productivity Quota and Accuracy requirements per departmental standards. 
  • Actively participates in and supports departmental and organizational quality initiatives and goals. 
  • Actively attends and participates in departmental, organizational and/or educational meetings, as requested. Remote employees are expected to travel onsite for meetings/events, as needed.
  • Complete and submit status (productivity) report at end of each work week to appropriate contact(s) per departmental standards.
  • Update worklist on shared drive on daily basis unless specified otherwise by departmental management.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and security of patient data in all formats maintained in Cancer Registry at all times.
  • Maintain annual competencies set forth by department, organization and/or national accreditation requirements.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required).
  • And up to 1 year of Experience in Cancer Registry (Preferred).
  • 1+ years of Abstraction Experience as a Certified Tumor Registrar in a hospital setting (Preferred).
  • Associate degree (Preferred).

Credentials:

  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) - active and in good standing (Required).

  • Knowledge of medical terminology

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to work within tight timeframes and meet strict deadlines
  • Knowledge of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) Program Standards (current version) Knowledge of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Summary Staging systems
  • Knowledge of AJCC Staging System (current version)
  • Knowledge of the Facility Operations and Data Standards (FORDS) and/or current version
  • Knowledge of the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) Standards X Familiar with Pennsylvania State reporting requirements Standard Work
