The Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Fellowship program is an 8 week paid summer extern program for nursing students who will have completed their junior year curriculum by the end of the Spring 2023 semester and in good academic standing from either The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing or Villanova University College of Nursing

The program is a product of the Susan D. Flynn Oncology Nursing Training and Development Fund, named after the late wife of Stamford businessman Frederick C. Flynn Jr. Susan Flynn died in 2013, following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer.

The program is intended to help stimulate the career interest and foster the professional development of potential Oncology Nurses. The Fellowship will enhance the student’s core clinical education through direct observation of Oncology patient care and exposure to related patient care duties and services that typify Oncology nurses’ valuable role and important inter-relationships with other members of the healthcare team.

Opportunities to attend various pertinent internal educational programs and meetings with key staff members at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania will provide additional learning experiences for the student nurse. Additionally, the program is designed to provide the nursing student with an opportunity to strengthen and reinforce his or her knowledge and skill in the practice of nursing under direct supervision of a registered nurse or advanced practice nurse preceptor and ease the transition of the realities of the work world.

The Oncology Student Nurse Fellow will attend special experience days in various areas, educational seminars, as well as follow his or her preceptor’s work schedule and will help provide direct care for that nurse’s patients. By the end of the 8 week program, students will have completed an Evidence-based Practice or Quality Improvement project, under the advisement and support of a nursing preceptor.

The Fellowship program includes a comprehensive scope of direct observational and learning experiences within the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) including exposure to:

• Oncology Nursing (possible roles/typical responsibilities, applied practice, possible career opportunities, etc.)

• Medical & Surgical Oncology (including treatment plans, key policies/procedures, patient education, etc.)

• Oncology Office/Functional Organization (organization, functions, roles/responsibilities)

• Palliative Care Department (organization, resources, services)

• Infusion Services

• Radiation Therapy

• Home Hospice Services
