General Summary Statement

 The Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for applying advanced practitioner skills for patients undergoing interventional cardiac or electrophysiology procedures or diagnostic procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization (Cath) Lab and/or for patients requiring observation or admission pre or post procedure. 

The position requires expert communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary health team. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Completing pre-cath/pre-admission workups for patients scheduled for a procedure in the Cath Lab inclusive of reviewing patient records to determine health status, taking a patient history and performing a physical examination, ordering laboratory and diagnostic studies, identifying normal and abnormal findings, documenting and communicating pertinent patient data

 Evaluating and document patient responses to therapeutic interventions; modify the plan of care to optimize outcomes

 Initiating referrals (consultations) to physician and/or other health care providers (social services, case management, nutrition, physical therapy, cardiac rehabilitation, etc.)

 Providing ongoing counseling and education to patients and families regarding the disease process and personal risk factors Screening patients and patient calls to determine need for medical attention

 Providing face to face or telephone communication to collaborating/referring/attending physicians Adhering to core measures standards for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and heart failure (HF)

 Implementing a detailed discharge plan to facilitate optimal care transition and prevent re-admissions, Emergency Department visits and unscheduled office visits Identifying opportunities for and providing both formal and informal education for nursing and other health care providers

 Responding to Code PCI calls in both the inpatient setting and the Emergency Department (ED) in order to facilitate rapid assessment and minimize door to balloon times 

Responding to patient emergencies in the Cath Lab and/or Post Interventional Unit (PINU); working in conjunction with other rapid responders and/or Code Team members as necessary

 Practicing and documenting in a manner that supports accreditation by Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), certification by The Joint Commission (TJC) for chest pain and heart failure, accreditation by The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions for Cardiac Excellence in the Cath Lab, and the achievement of Magnet status by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) 

Education Training and Experience Minimum 3 years clinical nursing practice in Cardiology or Critical Care. Minimum 2 years advanced practice experience.
