Summary:

  • The Surgical Clinical Nurse Reviewer's chief responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data to the ACS NSQIP and MBSAQIP programs. This is accomplished through high-quality clinical screening, data compilation, documentation and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the medical center. The SCNR also works closely with the members of the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as may be identified.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the division of UPHS Clinical Effectiveness, Quality and Disease Management
  • Responsible for the reliable collection of preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record system.
  • Responsible for the identification of surgical patients for inclusion in the program registry through the application of strict program inclusion/exclusion criteria and randomization protocol.
  • Responsible for meeting the caseload accrual requirement of 1,680 cases per year through the correct application of the program’s randomization protocol.
  • Demonstrates applicability of the methodology and the reliability of definitions utilized by reviewers within the program through Inter-rater Reliability (IRR) testing.
  • Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
  •  Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.


Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing. (Required)
  • 3+ years of experience in inpatient surgical nursing. (Preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare and database analysis. (Preferred)
  • Master's degree with a Clinical and Administrative focus. (Preferred)


Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills with all levels of staff and personnel 
  • Experience with databases and data architecture 
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with confidential information 
  • Represents Penn Medicine in a consistently professional manner 
  • Management in Clinical applications either in application support or implementation role 
  • Knowledge of clinical practice
