The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a Lead Tissue Coordinator to join the team:

Summary:

  • The Lead Tissue Coordinator oversees the daily operation of the Molecular Anatomic Pathology (MAP) service. In addition to his/her routine tasks as a tissue coordinator, the lead evaluates the work load and the available staffing need and will direct resources as required to provide optimal workflow to reduce turnaround time. The lead coordinator will establish and monitor dashboards to ensure expedited handling of all pending requests. The lead will investigate and resolve any problems identified problems related to molecular anatomic pathology service. The lead coordinator will establish SOP and protocols and will participate in operational meetings of the division.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads the operations of the assigned section under the direction of the supervisor/manager. Ensures assigned tasks are distributed equally and patient care related functions are completed promptly and accurately. Provides guidance to the team members on how to handle issues and resolves problems.Professionally interacts with internal and external clients and resolves concerns and problems and expedites patient care related tasks. Helps the supervisor/manager investigate issues related to missing, mislabeled specimens or incorrectly ordered or handled cases. Provides guidance to clients on how to properly submit requests and samples.Under the direction of the supervisor/manager ensures activities related to MAP service are assigned and completed promptly. Ensure MAP workflow is organized and meets all CAP requirements. Creates SOP and workflow and ensures the tissue coordinators are adhering to established protocols. Provides mentoring to his/her team as necessary.Coordinates collaboratively with physician practices to identify new patients and arrange for the acquisition of reports/blocks/slides from health system hospitals and outside organizations. Assists in the day-to-day coordination of tissue and/or report retrieval activities, electronic order entry, procurement, shipping, storage, and submission of material for review and testing. Correctly retrieves and submits the appropriate human tissue for clinical diagnosis, molecular pathology, and/or clinical trial. Processes samples in a timely fashion following specific SOP, protocol requirements, and the established workflows. Works with UPHS pathologists to expedite the case review for tumor selection and adequacy determination and ensures that the corresponding pathology report is verified by the pathologist and is available to the ordering provider.

    Education or Equivalent Experience: 

  • At least 60 semester hours of education to include: 24 semester hours of science course work, including six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology and twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combinations (Required)
     
    AND

  • 2 years of experience with tissue banking or coordinating genomic testing on tumor samples in hospital or reference labs (Required)


  • Bachelor of Arts or Science in biological, clinical or life sciences (Preferred)

    AND

  • 2 years of experience with tissue banking or coordinating genomic testing on tumor samples in hospital or reference labs (Preferred)

  • Prior experience with Laboratory Information Systems/Penn Chart (Preferred) 
  • Strong customer service skills (Preferred)
