Summary:
- The Pulmonary Diagnostics / Rehab Respiratory Therapist is responsible for performing pulmonary function, exercise and other diagnostic testing procedures. Additional responsibilities include implementing and monitoring outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation exercise training and educational sessions.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains the functional accuracy of all laboratory instrumentation by performing routine maintenance and quality control procedures as required by the equipment manufacturer, regulatory agencies and the ATS / ERS recommendations.
- Performs routine pulmonary and exercise diagnostic procedures and assists the physician with special studies requiring a high degree of technical sophistication.
- Ensures that all procedures are performed safely, consistently and accurately in accordance with laboratory policy & procedure.
- Performs data collection, analysis, computation, and report generation for all tests performed.
- Acts as a technical resource and support person for the pulmonary physicians and other ordering physicians.
- Supervises outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation exercise training and educational sessions.
- Monitors patients during rehabilitation sessions; this includes patient’s pulse oximetry, blood pressure, respiratory rate, color, cough, breath sounds, level of dyspnea and rhythm monitoring as necessary.
- Provides patient/family individual pulmonary education and counseling, including home exercise and smoking cessation counseling if needed.
- Initiates emergency procedures (including cardiopulmonary resuscitation) according to policy both in the Pulmonary Diagnostics / Rehab area as well as in surrounding areas as needed.
- Maintains knowledge of the correct process for documentation of patient care and billing.
- Participates in the training of students and orientation of new employees as needed.
- Assists in maintaining an adequate supply inventory, performance of emergency equipment daily/weekly/monthly as needed.
- Participates in patient and family education.
- May be called upon to perform the duties of a Respiratory Therapist for inpatient care as needed and if appropriate.
- Demonstrates an understanding of appropriate safety and infection control techniques.
- Performs continuing education to ensure professional knowledge remains current and to stimulate professional growth.
Credentials:
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (Required)
- Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (Required)
- Basic Life Support/BLS (Required)
- Registered Pulmonary Function Technician (RPFT) Required within 1 year of hire
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Associate of Arts or Science (Required) AND 3+ years Minimum 3 years of experience as a respiratory therapist (Required)
- Bachelor of Arts or Science (preferred)
- Experience in performing pulmonary function testing or pulmonary rehabilitation (preferred)
