Network Engineer
The Network Engineer works with other engineers on the team on issues related to the coordination, control, design, support, and operation of the Penn Medicine communications network. This network includes data, voice, and video services across Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). Plans, configures, tests, maintains, troubleshoots and tunes network infrastructure such as routers, multi-function switches, gateways, firewall systems, load balancers, WLAN controllers, virtual private networks and network security devices.
Accountabilities
- Maintains data, voice or video network hardware and systems; investigates and resolves network and hardware matters of significance; researches, analyzes, isolates and resolves errors; assesses and evaluates current and future systems.
- Provides technical support and input on network design issues. Provides problem resolution of problems to less experienced personnel.
- Evaluates and tests data, voice or video networking technologies to establish their potential use.
- Designs, implements and maintains LAN, WAN, or Voice Systems in accordance with specified requirements.
- Analyzes data, voice or video network documentation and assists in communicating to management regarding the current operational status of networks.
- Provides input to methods and procedures for new data, voice or video technologies to ensure performance. Recommends approach for customer, based on assessment of customer needs.
- Works with the Business to clarify programs/projects and then through the full systems development lifecycle. Manages client expectations and project status throughout the project, ensuring that project goals, budgets and timelines are met.
- Assists in providing consultation, support and guidance to organizations and clients. May develop and conduct training as needed or appropriate. Supports client expectations and balances the needs of organization and client to ensure satisfaction for all relevant parties.
- Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures
- Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
Minimum Requirements
Required Education and Experience
- H.S. Diploma is required. (Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or other related discipline is preferred)
- 3 year of experience in data networks working with multiple vendor platforms is required. (i.e. Extreme, HPE/Aruba, Juniper, Cisco, F5, or Microsoft)
- Experience working with network management software is required. (i.e. SolarWinds, Whatsup Gold, AKIPS, or Panorama)
- Experience working cloud network providers such as Azure or AWS is preferred.
- Experience working with automation and scripting languages such as Python, Powershell, Perl, or Ansible is preferred.
- Experience in a healthcare Information Services setting is preferred.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications
- Extreme ECS/EDS, CCNA, JNCIA, AZ-700, Network+

Senior Network Engineer
The Senior Network Engineer serves as a subject matter expert on issues related to the coordination, control, design, support, and operation of the Penn Medicine communications network. This network includes data, voice, and video services across Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). Plans, configures, tests, maintains, troubleshoots and tunes network infrastructure such as routers, multi-function switches, gateways, firewall systems, load balancers, WLAN controllers, virtual private networks and network security devices.
