This program is designed to provide optimal care of an organ donor while maximizing the partnerships between Gift of Life and Penn Medicine staff. Work in a perioperative setting specializing in donor optimization for organ recovery with the goal of increased healthier organs for transplantation. This is a blended role that offers a unique opportunity to work in the Gift of Life OR while rotating across some of the health systems highest acuity operating rooms base on and assigned by need. Clinical nurses in the center will partner with the intensive care unit, anesthesia, and the Gift of Life staff to complete the organ procurement effectively and promptly, with the goal of procuring all transplantable organs and maximizing the gift of organ donation.
No operating room experience needed but successful completion of the Gateway to the OR cohort is required. Experienced nurses with at least one year under their belt may be considered for the Gateway program with a start date of March 3rd 2025. The Gateway to the OR program serves as a 6-month orientation to build competent and successful perioperative nurses by using basic didactic education that offers the rationale and theory required to provide safe perioperative patient care. The comprehensive curriculum is designed to provide a more efficient and consistent education to improve the development of nurses with no or limited OR experience. During the program, nurses learn the fundamental principles of operating room nursing through both formalized classroom instruction (5 weeks) and clinical experience (16 weeks) with a preceptor. At completion of the program, nurses become key members of the operating room team at one of the most respected hospitals in the country.

The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague independently provides patient care through the application of the nursing process and accepts accountability for the nursing care of assigned patients. Assigned patients may range in age from infancy to the elderly.

The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague works closely with the interprofessional health care team to facilitate the coordination of care across the continuum. The nurse focuses on expanding the knowledge and skills necessary to provide individualized care based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, safety, and age appropriate considerations of assigned patients.
The Clinical Nurse 2 Colleague seeks feedback in assuming leadership roles and provides feedback for improved clinical practice. The nurse demonstrates how nursing practice impacts the organizational vision, mission, and goals and the care delivery system. The nurse complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies.
