Summary:
The Senior Manager of Infrastructure Disaster Recovery is a leadership position responsible for leading the organization's disaster recovery (DR) planning, execution, and testing efforts, ensuring the resilience of IT infrastructure in the event of disruptions or disasters within Penn Medicine. The Senior Manager will be a key leader within the organization, playing a crucial role in defining and executing the organization's strategic goals. This includes protecting the organization's digital assets, maintaining business continuity, and ensuring operational stability through disaster recovery readiness. The Senior Manager will collaborate with cross-functional teams, oversee the creation and testing of DR strategies, and continuously refine DR plans to align with business needs and technological advancements.
Responsibilities:
The Senior Manager of Infrastructure Disaster Recovery is accountable for the following:
Strategic Leadership
- Design, implement and maintain the organization’s disaster recovery strategy, ensuring alignment with business continuity objectives and risk management frameworks.
- Develop, document, and maintain comprehensive disaster recovery plans for all critical systems and infrastructure components including data centers, networks, applications, and cloud platforms.
- In collaboration with IS teams, assess and enhance system recoverability, implement or collaborate on backup schedules, system architecture and configuration, and monitor the organization’s ability to meet expected recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs).
Team Leadership
- Lead and mentor a team of disaster recovery professionals, technology vendors and DR consultants fostering a culture of resilience and preparedness.
- Fosters a high-performance culture, mentors team members, and promotes professional development.
- Builds strong cross-functional relationships with other IS teams.
- Provides leadership and maintains accountability for service level agreement aligned to the organizations’ continuity goals.
DR Program Management
- Lead and manage the entire DR lifecycle, including the design, implementation, testing, and execution of disaster recovery procedures.
- Create and maintain detailed DR runbooks, ensuring they are up-to-date and tested regularly.
- Ensure that disaster recovery solutions are scalable and flexible to meet evolving business and technological needs.
Testing & Simulation
- Design, schedule, and conduct regular DR drills and simulations across all critical infrastructure to validate recovery capabilities.
- Analyze test results, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions to enhance DR effectiveness.
- Document and communicate test outcomes and lessons learned to senior leadership.
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborate with the cybersecurity BCDR lead and BCDR governance committees to capture operational requirements for system resiliency and recoverability.
- Provide regular updates and reporting on the status of disaster recovery readiness, risks, and action plans.
- Lead multiple technology groups to ensure that the application, integration, infrastructure, and security architectures are designed to meet evolving business requirements on Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity and align with the organization’s Technology Roadmap
- Coordinate with cybersecurity, infrastructure, and application teams to ensure integrated incident response and recovery processes.
Continuous Improvement
- Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies to enhance disaster recovery strategies.
- Implement automation and modern solutions (cloud, hybrid environments) to improve DR effectiveness and reduce manual intervention.
- Stay current on regulatory requirements, best practices, and compliance standards (e.g., ISO, NIST) related to IT disaster recovery and business continuity.
Innovation and Process Improvement
- Drive continuous process improvements.
- Work with technology vendors and BCDR service providers to ensure DR requirements are met, including SLA adherence for recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO).
- Identify opportunities for innovation, cost reduction, and operational efficiencies.
- Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.
Credentials:
- Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP) or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) are a plus.
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Bachelor's degree. (Required)
- 10+ years of Information Technology experience with experience in disaster recovery, business continuity or a related field. (Required)
- Healthcare IT Experience. (Required)
- Master's degree. (Preferred)
