Summary:
- The Human Factors Specialist will work in conjunction with the Human Factors Scientist, the Director of Patient Safety, and clinical informaticists to apply human factors techniques and strategies to all aspects of Patient Safety in the health system.
This role will be responsible for identifying, designing, executing, and evaluating outcomes through a human factors and user-centered design lens on the health system's approach to patient safety, to include all aspects of the sociotechnical systems (people, tasks & processes [workflows], tools & technologies, physical environments, and the organization). They will be tasked with designing the information architecture for a new safety event reporting system to integrate reporting taxonomies and user interface design across multiple hospitals with different state reporting requirements in a large academic health system. Their work will include projects that react to problems and safety events, as well as proactive projects such as the design layout of clinical spaces or evaluating the impact of new organizational policies on efficiency, cognitive workload, and team dynamics.
Responsibilities:
- Leads large system performance improvement projects for patient safety
- Participates as member of the Corporate Patient Safety team attending all relevant meetings and assisting with safety event analysis, and design and implementation of new system level projects
- Participates and/or conducts Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) on significant safety events.
- Identifies the need for and conduct contextual observations, contextual interviews, cognitive task analyses, heuristic evaluation, or other human factors methodologies to determine where improvements are needed in current processes and technologies.
- Identifies the need for and conduct cognitive walkthroughs, participatory design sessions, pilot tests, or other design activities to support development of new processes and technologies. Develops and executes evaluation protocols for human performance testing prior to full implementation of new processes and technologies.
- Conducts Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Human Factors Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (HF-FMEA) as appropriate to evaluate new processes, workflows, and/or user interface designs to minimize the chance of error before implementing in health system practice.
- Facilitates meetings and other communication to develop consensus across the health system enterprise about standardized, best-practice processes and workflows that will be adopted across the organization.
- Provides consultation on human factors activities and principles to members of the health system involved in patient safety and quality improvement efforts, in particular to the Patient Safety Officers and Directors of the health system.
- Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- Master's degree. (Required)
- 5+ years of relevant experience. (Required)
- Healthcare clinical application experience preferred; experience in aviation, manufacturing, military human systems integration (HIS), or similar fields also valued. (Preferred)
