Summary:

  • The Radiation Oncology service at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (PA-C) to provide inpatient consultative services to radiation oncology patients across units. This is a high paced service whereby the APP will work in collaboration with our inpatient/palliative service which is comprised of radiation oncology attending and resident physicians, advanced practice providers, registered nurses and social workers. Although primarily aligned with our inpatient team, the APP will regularly interact with other disease site teams within the department. Effective communication and organizational skills are essential.

  • The APP directs the clinical management of patients requiring or being considered for radiotherapy, definitive or palliative. This includes completing inpatient consultations, performing histories and physicals, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, making recommendations for symptom management and treatment related toxicities, providing patient and family education, coordinating care amongst services and providing radiation recommendations made in conjunction with their collaborator. There will be an intermittent need to complete outpatient visits. The APP is expected to manage patient care autonomously within the scope of their professional practice.

Leadership through participation in the department’s research mission, departmental or hospital committees and outreach via lectures and publications is highly encouraged.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct clinical care for patient population according to established protocols and utilizes evidence based practice standards in collaboration with team.
  • Maintains accurate and confidential medical records. Documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with organizational standards in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Identifies self properly to the patient and family, and clarifies the role of the nurse practitioner if necessary.
  • The nurse practitioner should function within their scope and refer to the collaborating physician when outside of scope, and/or directed by the collaborating physician or when requested by the patient and/or family.
  • Performs interventions specific to assigned patient population and collaborative agreement.
  • Participates in the performance improvement processes to meet quality of care and service standards.
  • Demonstrates awareness of professional responsibility as role model to peers and members of the health care team.
  • Perform approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based upon patient’s clinical status.
  • Addresses patient and family concerns and creates a therapeutic relationship to provide support.
  • Provide patient education, counseling and instruction regarding patient diagnosis, medical treatments, medications, and preventative care.
  • Participate in and support accreditation, compliance and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Precept NP students and other health care learners.
  • Identifies patient/family needs for community resources and refers appropriately.

Credentials:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support required
  • ACLS (For providers in the acute care setting) required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
  • BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required.
  • Board Certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (Required)
  • PA CRNP or PA-C licensure required.
  • PA Prescriptive Authority required.
  • PA RN licensure (RN) required. 
  • National Board Certification.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • BSN/MSN or BS/MHS (Required)
  • New to practice or < 2.5 years will be considered
  • The CRNP / PA-C must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board.

Other Information:

  • Full time, Monday – Friday Day shift.
  • AONCP certification strongly encouraged within one year of employment
