Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Advanced practice specialist who provides clinical training, education and monitors and evaluates practice within the Clinical Nutrition Support Services (CNSS). As a practice specialist, this clinician is responsible for both initial and ongoing competency training and evaluation of staff, including development of annual competency program. Actively participates in the development and implementation of departmental education programs (continuing education, education of students and professional visitors) and reviews/develops nutrition education programs provided across the organization. Organizes and facilities clinical mentoring program. Coordinates internal clinical nutrition support rounds for the department. Monitors practice trends, evaluates evidence as it relates to practice and contributes to the development of evidenced–based policies/procedure and practice guidelines within the departmental and hospital. Participates in initiatives to evaluate or improve clinical practice (Quality assurance and performance improvement, projects). Conducts practice based clinical audits of staff in conjunction with Clinical Manager and/or Director. May provide direct patient care in the setting of clinical training/orientation of staff and/or to maintain clinical skills/competency. Practices clinically at an advanced level due to past experiences that allow for recognition of patterns that guide clinical practice. Offers expertise in the nutrition management of disease specific or specialized patient populations including the care of patients receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition. Represents CNSS on hospital committees or workgroups. Presents lectures/in-services within UPHS and for outside professional organizations. The Clinical Educator and Advanced Practice Specialist demonstrates clinical leadership by participation in committees and professional organizations. 


  • Expertly performs nutrition assessments, identifies nutrition diagnosis, develops nutrition interventions/plan of care, monitors and evaluates outcomes of nutrition care/interventions.
  • Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to assure that nutrition assessment, treatment and care is appropriate based on the unique chronological issues and needs of the adolescent, young adult, adult and older adult patient.
  • Balances multiple priorities independently and is expected to manage competing demands.
  • Is a member of at least 1 professional organization; is encouraged to participate in the organization or consider participation in a local, state or national committee.
  • Displays a commitment to research through literature review and evidenced based practice, provides leadership and guidance to peers in the interpretation of research and application to practice.
  • Investigates current research to address unique clinical situations and identifies practice variations and opportunities for practice standardization and/or education of CNSS staff or other health care providers.
  • Serves as a local expert for peers within their area of practice and across practice areas.
  • Organizes and facilitates a clinical mentoring program to support staff professional growth.
  • Serves as an expert resource and support to clinical and management staff.
  • Active member in a department, hospital committee, Unit-based leadership counsel or workgroup.
  • Provides coordination and support of department research initiatives.
  • Supports hospital public relations and media requests (publications, interviews, community outreach projects).
  • Takes a lead role in the education of other health care professionals (Pharm residents, visiting scholars, medical students, RD peers); through clinical observation experiences, case presentation, lectures, special projects. Develops training/education materials for these groups.

  • Credentials:
  • Licensed Dietician-Nutritionist (Required)
  • Registered Dietitian (Required)
  • CDE or CNSC or CSG or CSO or CSOWM or CSR or RDN-AP (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree or Masters of Arts or Science required. Completion of an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited didactic program in dietetics 
  • At least 10 years’ experience as an Registered Dietitian
  • Accredited Dietetic Internship Program, Individualized Supervised Practice Pathway (ISPP) or integrated supervised practice training to meet accreditation standards.
